The Federal Ministry for Digital Transformation and Government Modernisation (BMDS) was founded in May 2025 as a ministry of implementation. Our mission: to take action, quickly deliver concrete successes, remove impediments and produce visible results. The BMDS brings together key digital skills and resources, clearly defines responsibilities and will manage all federal IT.
We see ourselves as the ministry for the future, for opportunities and for efficiency. Digital transformation is an important factor for Germany’s attractiveness as a business location. That is why we are looking at new operating and business models together with partners in business and industry and why we are working to advance the use of artificial intelligence and to expand the data economy. We want to be the drivers of a new administrative culture and overcome a silo mentality. Our staff work using agile methods in interdisciplinary teams that extend across departmental boundaries.
The BMDS is not an end in itself; instead, it is an opportunity to transform Germany into a modern and efficient state that can take advantage of the latest digital technology. We want to regain the public trust. For people in Germany and for our economy, that means: less bureaucracy, more service, faster decision-making – digital progress that truly makes a difference.
