Digital Government
Germany is using digital technology to move faster and get more done
Germany is writing a new chapter in public administration: government of the future is proactive, connected, efficient and oriented on the needs of individuals and businesses. Our aim is clear: digital first. We want to offer all government services online from start to finish – fast, simple and free of unnecessary paperwork. So we are organising services in line with the way people actually live.
To make that happen, we need a new digital foundation: an operating system for Germany. Shared standards and interfaces are taking our federal system of government into the digital age. The federal level is leading the way, providing digital tools and platforms for the federal states and municipalities and thereby laying the groundwork for forward-looking public administration everywhere in Germany.
Seamless digital public administration for Germany
The Federal Government is offering the federal states a single, connected system instead of many standalone digital solutions in the different federal states. Deutschland-Stack is the Federal Government programme to upgrade and standardise digital public administration at every level in line with European Union standards. We are seamlessly integrating artificial intelligence and cloud services to increase efficiency, speed and user-friendliness.
Making everything possible with digital technology
A key element of digital public administration is a user account linked to an individual’s digital identity. This makes access to government services much easier from start to finish. The need to visit government offices will be the exception, not the rule. It will become possible to do everything online, even starting a business within 24 hours. The European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet enables secure identification, authentication and payment by individuals and businesses. Another milestone is the automation of administrative processes. Example: After the birth of a child, parents will automatically be notified of the child benefits they will receive, even without having to apply for them. Artificial intelligence will assist with and advise on applications and their processing.
Digital sovereignty is an important principle in this context. We rely on European suppliers and only use trustworthy technologies.
This is how we are building tomorrow’s public administration – digital, service-oriented and ready for the future.
