Joint Statement

For release by the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade of the United Kingdom and the Federal Ministry for Digital Transformation and Government Modernisation of the Federal Republic of Germany, on the occasion of the Prime Minister’s visit to Germany, 8 October.

United Kingdom–Germany Statement on the launch of an Industrial Tech Corridor to strengthen technological capabilities across both countries

During UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s visit to Berlin on 8 October 2026, Prime Minister Burnham and Chancellor Merz announced the launch of a UK–Germany Industrial Tech Corridor to strengthen technological capabilities across both countries by connecting innovative AI and critical technology companies with industrial demand. The Corridor creates a practical route from introductions and pilot projects to commercial partnerships and scaled deployment.

The initiative will form a significant new project under the UK–Germany Friendship and Bilateral Cooperation Treaty, specifically within the UK–Germany Strategic Science and Technology Partnership.

The United Kingdom and Germany share a strategic ambition to turn their strengths in artificial intelligence and other critical technologies into large-scale industrial adoption. Germany’s industrial base creates significant demand for trusted AI, automation, cyber, data and digital infrastructure solutions. The United Kingdom brings one of Europe’s strongest pools of innovative and export-ready technology scale-ups. By bringing these complementary strengths together, the Corridor will support higher productivity, greater resilience and stronger technological capabilities across both economies.

The Corridor will be industry-driven and designed as a two-way initiative. It will initially support UK AI and critical technology scale-ups to engage with German industrial partners, while also creating opportunities for German AI and deep-tech companies to access leading UK industrial partners and expand in the UK market.

The two governments intend to provide political sponsorship and a visible platform for cooperation between technology companies, established industry and public-sector partners. The initiative demonstrates the shared commitment of the United Kingdom and Germany to trusted technological cooperation. It will support industrial modernisation, technological resilience and the adoption of critical technologies, while showing how sovereignty can be strengthened through close collaboration between trusted partners.

Germany’s Federal Minister for Digital Transformation and Government Modernisation, Dr Karsten Wildberger, said:
„Together with the UK, we're building an ideal launchpad for AI companies to scale internationally. The UK-German Tech Corridor will accelerate scale-ups to enter Europe’s most advanced AI ecosystems. This partnership represents an important step to strengthening our digital sovereignty.“

The Rt Hon Kanishka Narayan MP, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, said:
“The UK and Germany are natural partners in building the strategic technologies our economies will depend on in the years ahead. By connecting UK and German strengths in AI, industrial innovation, engineering and advanced digital technologies, this Corridor will help companies turn innovation into deployment, strengthen shared tech capabilities and deliver practical benefits for businesses, workers and public services.”
